Arnout Meijer at Galerie VIVID

There is not a single objective reality, but there are numerous subjective truths. In Arnout Meijer's first solo show at galerie VIVID, titled 336 m³ blue/orange , he presents several of these truths.
This site-specific installation is originated from Thanks for the Sky blue/orange , a lamp where the illusionary mixture of blue and orange light is intensified by the afterimage effect. The existing architecture of the gallery is transformed to depict a deceptive view on our sight. The movement of the sun, the colored sky, the objectes in the space, a passing red car and your perspective present together a multi-layered reality.
The fundamental strategy of our vision is to short-circuit our view and to construct, influenced by previous experiences, a single image. We see what we already know. Just as we all look at the same sun, we look at the same world, but we cannot experience the totality from one position. One point of view is a truth, a more complete picture is formed by multiple views.
About:
Arnout Meijer lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied at the Technical University Delft (2006-2008) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (2008-2012) after which he started his own practice. His self initiated and commissioned work covers several disciplines ranging from product design, sculptures, texts and installations.
Meijer's work explores the physicality and philosophy of perception. By sculpting with light, he manipulates its spatial and sensory properties while illuminating the aesthetics and immateriality. What we see is a presentation based on experience rather than an actual representation of the world derived from analyses of images. Illusions are therefore not exceptions, but precisely the way we shape the reality as we see it.
His work have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions including at Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Design Miami, Moscow Biënnale, PAD Paris, TodaysArt, Salone del Mobile Milan, Design Miami/Basel, Het Nieuwe Instituut and Villa Noailles.
