A Hill On A House by Yuko Nagayama & Associates is an urban house surrounded by tall buildings on all sides except for the northeast facing a street in Shibuya, Tokyo. The issue for the architects was how to bring light into the interior, to open the enclosed volume and to develop scenery within it while avoiding looks from the neighborhood.

Tsubomi House by Flathouse, Tokyo

Designed by architecture firm Flathouse, this contemporary seven-layer Tokyo-based home is the perfect example of Japanese living. In a mere 280 sq ft they manage to fit the biscuit shop on the ground floor, using the metal staircase they connect the kitchen and the dining room on the 1.5 level, then the living space on second level, and finally the sleeping area on the top floor that is shared by all family members.
